Progesterone Pregnancy

January 25, 2008 by

Progesterone is a hormone produced by the human body. Its commonly referred to as the “hormone of pregnancy” and interestingly is also produced by men but is mainly known for its effect in women and in particular its… assistance and importance during pregnancy.

Prior to pregnancy and in the early stages of pregnancy, progesterone is produced in the ovary – then progesterone levels increase when it starts being produced in the placenta at around pregnancy week 8. Its important to understand that low levels of progesterone during pregnancy have been associated with miscarriage. Ask your doctor for medical advise. This pregnancy website is NOT offering medical advice and you should always consult a qualified medical practitioner for professional advice.

Its believed that after giving birth the rapidly reducing progesterone levels cause a woman to become ready for breast feeding – i.e. breast milk comes in. A drop in progesterone levels prior to delivery could also be responsible for the onset of labour.
