Pregnancy week 22
By week 22 your baby is about 7 and a 1/2 inches long and weights about 12 ozs (or 350 grams).
Baby's features are more pronounced now and at this pregnancy stage, if he or she were right in front of you, you could a unique
human being - the baby's wrinkly skin, although still transparent, is becoming less so and there are soft hairs (lanugo) in evidence on baby's body - the fingernails are
clearly visible and baby has sweat glands at this stage.
Its possible to see what sex the baby is and if you have a girl, her vagina is starting to form - if its a boy the testicles are starting to drop into his scrotum.
Baby is very attentive now and is often awake (kicking you maybe) and taking in his or her environment - its not uncommon for baby to hear you talking or singing now so
feel free to communicate.
As far as your health is concerned, by pregnancy week 22 the worst part of pregnancy with frequent morning sickness is over.
From pregnancy week 22 onwards, some women start feeling contractions, known as Braxton-Hicks contractions - these are painless
natural contactions where the muscles in your tummy can suddenly get rock-hard, and are a precursor to the serious contractions that
will happen during labor - Braxton-Hicks contractions are normal and harmless - always remember to get in contact with your doctor
should the contractions become painful OR if you have more than four in an hour - this could be a sign of early labor and you will need
to take action immediately.
