pelvic exercises during pregnancy

April 1, 2011 by · Leave a Comment

Stand with your back against the wall and as you inhale try to flatten the small of your back against the wall. Relax as you inhale. Sometimes you may notice tingling or numbness in your pelvic area. This is due to weight of the baby pressing on nerves in legs and pelvis.

pregnancy week 35 – what is happening with you and baby

April 1, 2011 by · Leave a Comment

pregnancy week 35By now you are mor than likely visiting the bathroom pretty often. In an effort to avoid getting up too often during the night, you might try to do some pelvic exercises before you go to bed. Pelvic exercises during pregnancy can help. Keep maintaining a healthy diet. And remember that you are actually eating for your baby aswell. Although this doesn’t give you a licence to eat double, it is suggested by some nutritionists that you should add around 200 calories a day to your normal diet to meet the extra needs of your growing baby. By week thirty five you should have put on between 24 and 30 Lbs (around 11 to 13 kilos).

By pregnancy week 35 baby is now around 20 inches long (almost half a meter !) and weighs close to 2.5 kilos (5 and a half  pounds). And statistically around 90% of babies born during week 35 will survive, most having no real health problems. Your baby should have lung function at this stage.

pregnancy week 34 – the thirty fourth week of pregnancy

March 31, 2011 by · Leave a Comment

By the 34th week of pregnancy the baby will weigh around 5Lbs or 2 and a quarter kilos and is almost 20 inches long (0.44 meter) from head to foot. Some sources say that baby weighs around 4.5 Lbs now and is about 17 inches long. Baby is also drinking amniotic fluid at this stage at the rate of a pint a day ! And urinating the same amount. Placenta antibodies are helping baby develop antibodies to certain mild infections. Whatever the difference, its clear that baby is getting close to being ready to enter the world ! For Mother, braxton and hicks contractions may be increasing in number and getting stronger and if twins are expected it is likely they will stay in positions they are in before birth, while a single baby can go from a sitting position to breach…

Kayaking life jackets or vests are generally shorter than waterskiing or sailing jackets as they designed to be used when sitting down. Should it bother us that 13 percent of pregnant women don’t have health insurance ?

March 30, 2011 by · 1 Comment

Based on 2006 data almost 16% of people in the USA were uninsured with around 13% of all pregnant women being uninsured. One in five women of childbearing age (age 15 to 44) was uninsured. Younger women and low income women were more likely to be uninsured. Hispanic and Native American women were three times more likely to be uninsured than non-hispanic whites.

Does that mean that these women don’t care enough about themselves or their offspring to have pregnancy insurance ? Surely not. It could be that they can’t afford health insurance, or life circumstances such as a separation from an insured spouse has complicated matters.

Whatever the reason, it is not good enough for the woman, the child or society.

It is catastrophic in this day and age that a vast tract of motherhood (carrying our future in their wombs) is not covered by insurance. Society has failed them and by extension you could argue that you and I have failed them. By not having insurance there must be mental stress involved that cannot be beneficial for a growing baby. Did you know that Mothers of Babies who receive no prenatal care have an infant mortality rate more than six times that of mothers who receive early prenatal care ? Or that uninsured pregnant women are less likely to seek prenatal care in the first trimester and also less likely to receive the optimal number of visits during their pregnancy ? They have a 31% higher likelihood of experiencing an adverse health outcome after giving birth.

There is a geographic and demographic divide. The uninsured rate varies by state. Texas (31.3%) and New Mexico (29.7%) had the highest average rates of uninsured women of childbearing age, while Minnesota and Hawaii (10.8% each) had the lowest. Women of color are at particular risk for being uninsured, as are younger and low-income women.

Back to the money side of things. We all know that life is of more value than money. Right ?

Why is it then that in 2004, one in six women with individual coverage reported postponing or going without needed care because she couldn’t afford it ? Why is it that The Institute of Medicine estimates that the cost of achieving full insurance coverage in the U.S. would be less than the loss in economic productivity from existing coverage, and health insurance costs are rising ?

Where do we go now Mr Obama ?

Pregnancy week 28

June 3, 2010 by · 1 Comment

Pregnancy week 28 - this is the average baby crown to rump length at week 28 of pregnancyPregnancy week 28 markes the start of the third trimester of Pregnancy. So what is happening with you and your baby ? First of all your baby now weighs about 2 and a half pounds or just over 1 kilogram and his or her total length is about 16 inches or 0.4 meters ! (the crown to rump length is about 10 inches or one quarter of a meter). That is a huge change from pregnancy week 6 when your baby was at most 0.16″ long (crown to rump) and weighed practically nothing ! At week 28 your uterus continues to travel upwards and will usually be about 3 inches or 8 centimeters above your bellybutton. As far as weight gain goes you should have gained somewhere in the region of 7 and a half kilograms to 11 kilograms (17 to 24 Lbs)  by pregnancy week 28.  Your baby at this stage of pregnancy has had hair growth and could more than likely breath air if he or she had to. It is at this point you can begin feeling that your baby could survive a premature birth and that is a comfort to many parents to be. In addition to having functioning lungs, baby is able to open and close his or her eyes and eyelashes are growing. If your baby is a boy then at this point in pregnancy his testicles are dropping down to his strotum. The brain of your child is developing also and the smooth surface of the brain is giving way to the typical ridged surface we associate with someone’s brain. Baby can suck his thumb(s) now and there is more definition in his or her fingers and palms. At pregnancy week 28 you should be aware that doctors often take or repeat blood tests or other tests on you. A test called glucose tolerance testing may be required. When you are visiting your Doctor you should ask him or her which way the baby is facing. He may be able to tell you.
